Slavery in Math Problems

In this week's "What the heck were they thinking?"...
The professors say they were trying to include social studies into the math problems, when they asked questions such as "Each tree had 56 oranges. If 8 slaves pick them equally, then how much would each slave pick?" but they clearly had no cultural sensitivity. In my opinion, this is as bad as it gets when it comes to racist "mishaps" because these children have no idea into which context to put this information. "Something like shouldn't be imbedded into a kid of the 3rd, 4th, 5th, any grade," Barnett told WSB TV. "I'm having to explain to my 8-year-old why slavery or slaves or beatings are in a math problem. That hurts."
Slavery is something that needs to be taught and discussed, but clearly not in this manner.
